A landscape recognised by UNESCO
The Macchabée Bel Ombre region in the south west of Mauritius has been recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere Programme since 1977. Extending over 3,594 hectares near Plaine Champagne, this protected area preserves some of the island’s last remaining endemic vegetation, preserving a vital part of Mauritius’ natural heritage.
